Blaisdon Walk & Pub Lunch
The walk
This is a moderate circular walk of approximately 2 miles, taking around 45 to 60 minutes. The route includes fields, woodland and country lanes, with some steep inclines and a couple of stiles, making it a good option for walkers looking for a little variety rather than a completely flat stroll.
Start point
The walk starts at the Red Hart Inn car park, OS Sheet 162 map reference 703169. Please note that the car park is for patrons only. Alternative parking is available at the village hall, just past the beer garden, second drive on the right.
What you will see along the way
As you follow the route you will pass the village memorial, St Michael & All Angels Church, old orchard areas, a small vineyard and stretches of woodland. The walk offers a real mix of local history, open countryside and peaceful village scenery.
Views
One of the highlights comes as you head up the hill and stop to take in the view. On a clear day you may be able to spot the supports of the Severn Bridge, the winding river below, the Cotswold hills in the distance and even Robinswood Hill and Gloucester city lights later in the day.
Blaisdon Wood Vineyard
The route passes a small vineyard planted in 2018 with pinot noir, chardonnay and bacchus grapes. It is a lovely surprise on the walk and adds to the feeling that this route shows off a different side of Blaisdon.
Church and local history
St Michael & All Angels Church is believed to date back to the 13th century and was rebuilt after the village fire of 1699. You will also pass the memorial dedicated to villagers who lost their lives in the First World War, with further names added in memory of those connected to the village and Salesian school after the Second World War.
Dogs
This walk is mainly dog friendly, although there is a short roadside stretch to be aware of. There is also an alternative route option noted if there are cows in the field near the church.
Good to know
Because of the steep hill, stiles and uneven ground, sensible footwear is recommended. The walk is best suited to those comfortable with a little climbing and countryside terrain.
Pub lunch
Once you have completed the route, you can head back and enjoy a well-earned pub lunch, making this a great choice for a relaxed day out that combines fresh air, village views and somewhere cosy to eat afterwards.
